Outgoing coach Birmingham wants memorable farewell from Asian Games swimmers

BUKIT JALIL: National coach Paul Birmingham hopes his swimmers will make him proud at the Indonesia Asian Games before he takes up a new job offer in Canada.

The Australian tendered his resignation in June and the Asian Games will be his final assignment with Malaysia.

“I hope my swimmers will clock their personal best and qualify for the final of their respective events. They need push hard and do their best,” said Birmingham at the National Aquatic Centre on Monday.

“My swimmers will be against the continent’s best and it will not be easy. So far, training is going well and all of them are eager to make an impression.”

Birmingham believes Keith Lim and Welson Sim will both shine in the freestyle events.

Other swimmers selected for the Asian Games are Tern Jian Han, Foong Wei Tze, Phee Jinq En and Chan Jie.

In the 2014 Incheon edition, the now-retired Kevin Yeap and Khoo Cai Lin along with Vernon Lee made the final of their respective events.

Swimming is scheduled on Aug 19-24 at the Gelora Bung Karno Aquatic Centre in Jakarta.
