FORMER track queen Datuk Mumtaz Jaafar will win the Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) deputy president’s post uncontested following the withdrawal of Perlis AA president Datuk Shahidan Kassim yesterday.
The MAF annual general meeting (AGM)-cum-elections will be held today at Wisma OCM in Kuala Lumpur.
“I have withdrawn from contesting the deputy president’s post because I am now satisfied with the changes that I was promised (in MAF),” said Shahidan in a statement yesterday.
This is a surprising turn of events in a war where incumbent president Datuk Karim Ibrahim is being challenged by his deputy S.M. Muthu for the top post.
Perlis AA and Selangor AA nominated Muthu to take on Karim for the top post.
Karim received three nominations from Perak, Kelantan and Malacca.
Shahidan’s withdrawal, however, could impact Muthu’s hopes of ending Karim’s reign today,
M. Iyaru, Rajemah Sheikh Ahmad, Mohamad Awang, V. Mathivanan, William Ling, Datuk R. Annamalai, Fadzil Abu Bakar and Josephine Kang will be vying for the four vice-president’s posts.
Thirteen affiliates, with Sabah de-registered, will have three votes each to decide the future of MAF.
