IT is a no go for the doubles at next month’s Manila Sea Games after all.
Host the Philippines was initially supposed to organise men’s and women’s jumbo doubles along with the regular mixed doubles.
But the inability to get the courts built on time at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex has forced the organisers to pull the plug on doubles.
However, following the exclusion of doubles, the Philippines has moved to include three events: men’s team, women’s team and mixed team for the Games. The other events that will be held are men and women’s singles.
This decision is a big blow to the host, especially since the Philippines have a good opportunity to snare medals in the mixed doubles and jumbo doubles events.
Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) director Mejar (rtd) S. Maniam said: “It’s really unfortunate what has happened in the Philippines. I know the Philippine Squash Academy has really tried their best to get the courts built on time.
“Unfortunately, they were embroiled in a lot of internal politicking and it’s led to this outcome.
“It’s really a shame what has happened because we were very much looking forward to competing in mixed doubles.
“But I do appreciate the efforts of the Philippines squash association in quickly ensuring that we still have five events at the Games.”
