Two days left, Malaysia still 29 gold short of target

CAN Malaysia hit the 70-gold target for the Philippines Sea Games? With two days of competition left, the contingent have managed only 41 gold and going by Malaysia’s strength in the remainder of the events, it looks like an impossible mission.

Chef de Mission (CDM) Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin, however, is still optimistic of meeting the target.

Malaysia could go on to bag four titles in badminton alone today as they are represented in four finals — men and women’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles.

There are also chances for gold in polo, swimming and indoor hockey along with athletics, cue sports and archery.

At the 2017 Kuala Lumpur edition, Malaysia bagged a whopping 145 gold for the overall title, while the nation’s best haul outside the country was 68 gold at the 2007 Korat edition.

“I believe we will be on a roll once we breach the 40-gold mark,” Megat said.
