KUALA LUMPUR: Lim Ching Hwang, who swam for Malaysia in four Sea Games, has landed in hot water in Singapore.
The 24-year-old, who has become a Singapore permanent resident, was given a eight-week prison sentence on Tuesday (Feb 9) for defaulting on his national service (NS) obligations.
The Singapore Straits Times reported that Ching Hwang left the republic in July, 2015 and failed to report for NS in November that year. He only returned almost three years later in June, 2018 and enlisted in April, 2019.
On Tuesday, Ching Hwang pleaded guilty to two charges under the Enlistment Act, with another charge taken into consideration during sentencing by District Judge Ronald Gwee.
Ching Hwang swam for Malaysia in the Sea Games in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017. The 100m freestyler was also selected by Malaysia for the 2015 World Championships.
