Chinese New Year is a time for good fortune and new beginnings.
That is certainly the case for former national junior player Andrea Lee who hopes for a new beginning as she attempts to kick-start her squash career in the United States after a long battle with injury.
The 22-year-old, who was once a promising prospect in the national set-up, won silver at the 2017 World Junior Team Championship and was a double gold medallist at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Sea Games.
The KL-born, however, suffered a blow when she came down with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in 2018.
Andrea's fate took a turn for the worse when she suffered complications on her comeback trail and was subsequently dropped from the national programme last year.
She is, however, back on her feet and has taken a positive step forward by deciding to move to Waterville, Maine.
She will play college squash and pursue a degree in Economics at Colby College.
"Getting an ACL injury was tough, and the first surgery took a while because I was careful about it.
"The rehabilitation process then was slow because I didn't want to go through another surgery, but just when I was getting back to full training, my knee started swelling up again.
"I went for another MRI and discovered that my ACL wasn't there anymore. I had no choice but to go for another surgery.
"I have been cleared to return to training. The whole process was tiring, both mentally and physically.
"Of course, it was a little disappointing getting dropped from the national programme, but it didn't hit as hard as I was expecting it at some point.
"I was, however, a bit disappointed with the National Sports Council (NSC) for their lack of support during my surgery, although I had represented the country.
"But I am feeling positive and will start playing squash aggressively like I used to. I certainly have a point to prove.
It is, however, a big sacrifice for Andrea, who arrived in Maine on Monday and will miss the Chinese New Year festivities with her family this year.
"I am going to be missing out a lot this year, especially since it was also my dad's birthday last week.
"But on the bright side, the squash courts here are amazing, and I am definitely looking forward to training," she added.
