Syaiful excited to make Games debut and go against idol Dias

National para-swimmer Nur Syaiful Zulkafli can't wait to meet and compete against his idol, Daniel Dias, at the Tokyo Paralympic Games on Aug 24-Sept 5.

Nur Syaiful, who is making his Games debut, said it will be his only chance to go against Dias as the Brazilian will be retiring after the Paralympics.

The Sarawak-born athlete will compete in the men's 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle and 100m breaststroke S5 (limb disability) events.

Dias, who is regarded as one of the best para-swimmers in the world, has won 24 medals (14 gold, seven silver and three bronze) in his last three Paralympic outings.

Nur Syaiful said he is 100 per cent ready both mentally and physically to create a few surprises at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.

"I believe I am in my best form for the Games. I have been focusing on my technique, rhythm and stamina in training as I want to shine in Tokyo," said the 25-year-old.

Nur Syaiful was supposed to head to Berlin, Germany, for a training stint but cancelled it due to Covid-19 restrictions.

"I am a little upset that I did not go to Berlin for training. However, I believe I have done enough to prepare for the Paralympics," he added.

Malaysia's 22-member contingent will compete in nine sports and 32 events in total. --Bernama
