KUALA LUMPUR: It is really a last chance saloon for former world No 5 Low Wee Wern to save her career as she is staring at another serious injury.
In fact, the 31-year-old squash player is already looking at another spell on the sidelines as she requires surgery for her right knee.
The Penangite aggravated her posterolateral corner (PLC) injury when she was competing in the United States in July.
It will be a fourth major surgery for the world No 35 who has seen her career hampered by a series of surgeries over the years.
She had suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury to her left knee in 2015 and has already gone through three surgeries between 2015-2018.
Wee Wern is scheduled to depart for London in Friday for an appointment with knee surgeon Dr Andy Williams.
Dr Williams, who also operated on Wee Wern's left knee in 2017 and 2018, has an impressive track record having operated on top English Premier League (EPL) players, most notably Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk.
"I'm definitely gutted because injuries is always an athlete's worst nightmare," admitted Wee Wern.
"There's nothing really wrong with my left knee but I've been playing through the pain in my right knee for the past three years.
"With the help of my team, I have been managing the pain but it's gotten to a point where I need a surgical intervention to have a chance of returning to competitive squash.
"And this is really a last shot for me to carry on for another few more years.
"Dr Williams has done wonders to my left knee, and he's very good at what he does.
"He had a look at my MRI scans, but he can't make a firm judgement until he sees me but I am comfortable with his decision.
"We did have a conference call with him together with my team, the National Sports Institute (NSI) and Major (Rtd) Maniam. My consultation is booked for Sept 21 after the mandatory 10-day quarantine period," added Wee Wern.
If the consultation goes well, Wee Wern will undergo the surgery on Sept 28.
