Diving in the dark

Diver Cheong Jun Hoong is in the dark over her exclusion from the Podium Programme.

The former world champion, 31, is the highest profile casualty following the Sports Ministry's move to cut Podium Programme funding.

"I believe many people have read the reports on my getting dropped and are concerned about me," said Jun Hoong yesterday.

"I have not received any information or formal notification regarding this nor have I been asked to communicate and talk about the renewal of my contract with the national team.

"In fact, I only learned through reporters and news reports that I would not get a renewal.

"But in any case, I can only accept the decision and I will update everyone if I have any news," she said.

The surprise is that Jun Hoong is the only diver axed from the national programme. Earlier, there were concerns that under-performing divers like Ooi Tze Liang and Chew Yiwei would get chopped but the pair survived the cull.
