KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian contingent continued to add to their medal haul at the Hanoi Sea Games with a number of new faces proving their mettle at Asean level today.
The day started on a positive note for Malaysia with wushu duo Clement Ting and Tan Zhi Yan – both Sea Games debutants – scoring upset victories in the men's changquan and taijiquan to secure the country's 10th and 11th gold medals in Hanoi.
Calvin Lee also did well to contribute a silver via the men's nandao event.
Azri Azmat Sefri and Malvern Abdullah started the ball rolling for the bodybuilding squad, winning silver and bronze respectively in the men's Under-55kg and Under-65kg classes respectively.
Syarul Azman Mike Mahen, who tested positive for Covid-19 on arrival in Hanoi, later tested negative upon a retest today, and has been given the all clear to compete in the men's athletic physique open category on Sunday.
The kurash squad capped their campaign with a third bronze through Razlan Rozaidi in the men's Under-73kg category today. The team have thus exceeded their two-bronze medal target in Hanoi.
The men's artistic gymnastics squad of Luqman Al Hafiz Zulfa, Ng Chun Chen, Zulbahrin Mat Asri, Tan Fu Jie, Teoh Chuen Feng and Muhammad Sharul Aimy, however, ended the men's team event empty-handed after coming in fourth.
There were no surprises in the men's sepak takraw opening group A tie between Malaysia and Thailand as the latter carved out a 3-0 win.
Olympian fencer Yu Peng Kean's return to the Sea Games came to a premature end as he lost to all four of his opponents in the men's individual sabre preliminaries. Peng Kean, who retired in 2017 due to recurring injuries, was trying to make a comeback.
