KUALA LUMPUR: Triathlete Chong Xian Hao is in danger of missing the Birmingham Commonwealth Games from July 28-Aug 8 after picking up an elbow injury.
The national contingent have already lost the services of badminton player Lee Zii Jia who pulled out to focus on the Tokyo World Championship in September while squash ace S. Sivasangari had to withdraw after a car accident last month.
The 21-year-old Xian Hao was expected to better his personal best of 1:00:30s in his second appearance in the Commonwealth Games. In 2018 at the Gold Coast, he clocked 1:04:45 to rank 30th out of 36 athletes.
It is learnt that Xian Hao injured his elbow following a fall from his bicycle last month during training. Scans done at the National Sports Institute revealed that he has bone Edema.
Triathlon coach Albert Tan said they are awaiting a directive from the Olympic Council of Malaysia on the next course of action before they fly to Birmingham tomorrow.
"Xian Hao can still cycle and run, but he has pain in his elbows when he swims," said Albert.
