Newcomer Aiman makes impact at Asean Para Games

KUALA LUMPUR: Ammar Aiman Nor Azmi made a winning debut in the men's 400m T20 (intellectual impairment) at the Asean Para Games today.

He clocked 48.42 to win gold at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh.

The Johor athlete improved on his previous best of 49.07, which he did against able bodied athletes in the Federal Territory All Comers in March to win silver.

Indonesia's Alfin Nomleni clocked 48.97 to finish second and Nasharuddin Mohamad posted 50.75 for third.

Aiman, 21, said he was overjoyed to dip below 49 seconds.

"This is a good start for my athletics career. I can go faster," said the Para Sukma champion who only started training under Hamberi Mahat in February.

Malaysia also collected two silver and one bronze today. Wong Kar Gee emerged second in the men's long jump T13 (visual impairment) with 6.24m. Indonesia's Muammar Habibila claimed gold with 6.37m while Cambodia's Ken Thepthida earned bronze (5.94m).

Badrul Hisam Musa cleared 10.65m for silver in the men's shot putt F12 (visual impairment), finishing behind Indonesian Marcelino Michael (12.58m). Thai Wasun Juntinmatorn (10.27m) settled for bronze.

Taufik Hidayat Nasirdin improved on his PB of 5.47m with a new mark of 5.90m in the men's shot putt F54 (physical disability) to bag bronze. Vietnam's Vo Van Tung (7.30m) and Brunei's Alihan Muda (6.20m) won gold and silver.
