KUALA LUMPUR: Ziyad Zolkefli won a silver at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris on Friday.
The 33-year-old from Selangor hurled the iron ball 17.21m in the men's shot put F20 (intellectual impairment) at the Charlety Stadium.
Nine athletes took part in the event. Ukraine's Paralympic champion Maksym Koval shattered his own world record with 17.57m en route to gold.
Ukrainian Oleksandr Yarovyi settled for bronze with 16.99m.
Ziyad said: "Although age is catching up, I did well to throw a distance of 17.21m. I'm also happy to deliver the first medal for Malaysia here. I'm now ranked No. 2 in the world.
"I look forward to the Paris Paralympics, which could be my last outing of my career.
"I hope the medal I won in Paris will inspire my five other teammates to win medals," said Ziyad.
Ridzuan Puzi qualified for the final in the men's 100 T36 (cerebral palsy) by clocking 12.04 to finish third in the heats.
All focus will be on two-time Paralympic champion Latif Romly to win his third world title in the men's long jump T20 (intellectual impairment) event on Monday.
He holds the world record of 7.64m, which he did in the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta.
