Tekong Syahir targets two Asian Games gold

KUALA LUMPUR: National sepak takraw team captain Syahir Rosdi has set a personal target of two gold medals in the Hangzhou Asian Games from Sept 23-Oct 8.

The seasoned tekong believed that the team can exceed the one gold and one silver medal targets set by the Sepak Takraw Association of Malaysia (STAM).

The Penangite said they have a strategy to overcome their arch rivals Thailand who are the favourite for the gold in the regu and team event.

"The players and coaches are 100 per cent committed and we want to achieve something in the Asian Games.

"We have a target of two gold medals although we are competing against Thailand," said the 27-year-old during a visit by Asian Games Deputy Chef de Mission Dr Farrah-Hani Imran at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil, today.

"We will fight all out to get these two gold medals. We had beaten Thailand before and we can repeat that feat. We are all fired up."

Malaysia won the inter-regu gold at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia

when Thailand did not compete in that category.

But the national squad will not have that luxury in Hangzhou as Thailand will compete in both the inter-regu and team categories. Malaysia's best bet of winning gold will still be in the inter-regu event.

Syahir, who is making his third appearance in the Asiad, said Thailand don't have any weak spot in their playing style, but he believes Malaysian players have their strength as well.

"Thailand's 12 players can be considered as perfect but we have our strategy to win points and the sets," said Syahir who also warned his teammates against underestimating Indonesia and South Korea.
