Galloping joy from Qabil, badminton flop from men's team

KUALA LUMPUR: Day five of the Hangzhou Asian Games saw Malaysia experience joy over equestrian rider Qabil Ambak Mahamad Fathil and disappointment over the national men's badminton's team.

Veteran horseman Qabil and his equine partner, Rosenstolz delivered a rousing gold medal in the individual dressage freestyle.

It was remarkably the first gold medal for 43-year-old Qabil since his Asiad debut 25 years ago.

The euphoria of Qabil's gold, however, was marred by the elimination of Malaysia from the first round of the men's badminton team event. Malaysia lost 3-1 to South Korea.

Malaysia got off to a bad start with Lee Zii Jia losing 21-14, 14-21, 21-18 to unheralded world No. 47 Jeon Hyeok Jin.

Former world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik put Malaysia back in contention with a 21-17, 21-9 win over Seo Seung Jae-Kang Min Hyuk.

But Ng Tze Yong fell 21-11, 21-16 to the little-known world No. 119 Lee Yun Gyu in the second singles.

And the night ended miserably for Malaysia when second men's doubles Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi went down 21-16, 21-18 to Kim Won Ho-Na Sung Seung.

Track cyclist Shah Firdaus Sahrom delivered Malaysia's second medal of the day when he clinched the sprint bronze medal after beating China's Xue Chenxi 2-0 at the Chun'an Jieshou Velodrome. It was the third medal from the Malaysian track cyclists.

Malaysia have won two gold, two silver and five bronze medals after five days of competition.

However, Malaysia still trail Thailand, who are the best-performing Southeast Asian country with six gold, three silver and nine bronze.

Hosts China continued to lead the medal standings with 90 gold, 51 silver and 26 bronze.

South Korea remained second with 24-23-39 while Japan were third with 18-30-30.
