Anwar assures continual government support for Malaysian sports

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite financial constraints, the government will continue to prioritise sporting activities in the country.

This assurance was given by Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who emphasised that sport activities are a part of the nation's culture, which can improve the quality of life.

Anwar said sports activities can also help shape the character of Malaysians, foster love for the country and enhance patriotic spirit when competing on the international stage.

"Sports have their strengths. It's an activity that unites urban and rural communities, regardless of race or religion, through a shared interest.

"Despite economic and financial constraints, we will consider allocations (for sports)," said Anwar who was speaking at the 2023 National Sports Awards ceremony at the National Sports Council in Bukit Jalil on Thursday.

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the government remains committed to providing tax relief to donors sponsoring sports associations in the country.

"I reiterate my statement to colleagues in the ministry and associations that tax relief will be given to donors who provide assistance and support to advance sports in this country," he said.

Also present were Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Sports Minister Adam Adli Halim and Olympic Council of Malaysia president, Tan Sri Norza Zakaria.
