Azeem likely to secure Malaysia's sole Olympic wild card in athletics

KUALA LUMPUR: Azeem Fahmi hopes the Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) will grant him the sole wild card for the Paris Olympics after winning the men's 100m silver medal at the Asean University Games (AUG) in Surabaya, Indonesia, on Tuesday.

Azeem clocked a decent time of 10.37s to finish behind former world junior champion Lalu Muhammad Zohri, who won the blue riband event, clocking 10.19.

Another Indonesian, Fatah Sidik Jaelani (10.59) settled for bronze in 10.59, while Malaysia's Fahimi Aliff (10.60) came in fourth.

The 20-year-old Azeem, who won bronze in the Hangzhou Asian Games, said: "It was not my best performance, but I am glad I finished on the podium.

"I have everything in the final but could not beat Lalu to the gold. I will now focus on the 200m and 4x100m events," said Azeem.

MAF will decide on Wednesday whether to choose Azeem or track queen Shereen Samson Vallabouy to take up the Paris Olympic wild card.

However, Azeem will likely get the nod as Olympic wild cards are only available for the 100m, 800m and marathon events.

Shereen focuses on the women's 400m.
