Hoe Yean eyes national record on Olympic debut

KUALA LUMPUR: Swimmer Khiew Hoe Yean hopes to make a decent splash at the Paris La Defense Arena on his Olympic debut at the Paris Games in the men's 400m freestyle heats on Saturday.

The 22-year-old Hoe Yean is the current national record holder in the event, clocking three minutes and 48.35 seconds at the Australian Championships in April.

However, he will face an uphill battle against the big guns in Paris.

For Hoe Yean, rewriting his national record will be the goal, especially after training sessions with reigning world champion Samuel Short of Australia in Brisbane recently.

Meanwhile, compatriot Tan Rouxin will compete in the women's 100m breaststroke on Sunday.

National swimming coach Erik Anderson said the top eight swimmers from the 400m breaststroke heats will qualify for the final.

"Both swimmers should not put undue pressure on themselves.

"It will be exciting for Rouxin in her first competition on the world stage," said Anderson
