KUCHING: The Federal Territories (FT) rhythmic gymnastics squad showcased their dominance once again, clinching the gold medal in the team all-around event for the second consecutive Malaysia Games (Sukma).
The FT gymnasts ruled the floor at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching on the first day of Sukma 2024, amassing 252.35 points across four apparatus: hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon.
FT team manager, Clarissa Lee, attributed the victory to the intensive two-week training the athletes underwent in Japan earlier this year.
"It was in Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education where we had training with the coaches over there and they checked our routines and gave comments on what to be done and what to improve so we can come back stronger," she told reporters here today.
In today's showdown, FT's squad of young gymnasts delivered electrifying performances.
The team was spearheaded by national gymnast Nur Zhafirah Wong Rudy Kurniawan, 14, along with 13-year-olds Cassidy Jia Xin Tan, Rhea Dhaliwall and Ru-Zanne Sui.
Selangor, represented by Ebony Hui Ru Chai, Emily En Rui Low, Eryn Chang and Lee Li Momoka Sam, took home the silver medal with a score of 215.95.
Negeri Sembilan's team of Angel Tan Yonn Yee, Dhaffatul Nurbaiti Harman, Shakira Eleina Shukri and Nur Sumayyah Mohd Suhaimi secured the bronze with an overall score of 196.35.
The points tallied today also determined the eight athletes advancing to tomorrow's individual apparatus finals.
