Paris 2024: Fareez fights his way to third win as others fall short

KUALA LUMPUR: National shuttlers churned out the desired results but Malaysian athletes in other sports found it hard to make an impact on the third day of the Paris Paralympics today.

In badminton, Fareez Anuar emerged group B champion after showing strong determination to notch a 17-21, 21-17, 21-17 win over Japan's Imai Taiyo in their men's singles SU5 (physical impairment) clash at La Chapelle Arena.

Fareez had earlier this week won his first two group matches against Dheva Anrimusthi of Indonesia and Taiwan's Fang Jen-Yu. Fareez' teammate Cheah Liek Hou, who competes in the same class, will play his final group match against Suryo Nugroho (Indonesia) later tonight in Paris.

Earlier today, men's doubles WH1-WH2 (physical impairment) duo Ikhwan Ramli-Noor Azwan Noorlan tamed German duo Rick Hellmann-Thomas Wandschneider 21-19, 21-17 in their group B encounter at La Chapelle Arena.

Ikhwan-Azwan had on Friday beaten China's Mai Jianpeng-Qu Zi Mo, also in straight sets.

In track cycling, Malaysian duo Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin and Adi Raimie Amizazahan were unable to progress in the men's C1-3 (physical impairment) 1,000 metre time trial at the Saint Quentin en Yvelines Velodrome.

Yusof placed eighth from 17 riders in the qualifiers on a factored time of one minute and 9.487 seconds while Adi was 11th on 1:13.780s. The duo thus missed the top-six cut for the final.

In boccia, it was the end of the road for Abdul Razzaq Abdul Rahman who suffered a 4-1 defeat to Ukraine's Artem Kolinko in their men's individual BC4 (physical impairment) pool C encounter at the South Paris Arena.

It was Razzaq's third loss in as many matches after going down 8-0 to Great Britain's Stephen McGuire on Thursday and 6-4 to Canada's Iulian Ciobanu on Friday. He thus did not advance to the quarterfinals.
