KUALA LUMPUR: The national contingent concluded its campaign at the Paris Paralympics on a quiet note at La Chapelle Arena today.
Powerlifter Jong Yee Khie, who was the last Malaysian to compete in Paris, settled for seventh from the nine lifters that competed in the men's under-107 kilogramme class.
Yee Khie, who claimed silver at Tokyo 2020, failed to clear 208 kilogrammes on his first attempt but succeeded on his second try.
He attempted 223kg on his third and final attempt but was unsuccessful after suffering what appeared to be an injury to his right shoulder or right upper pectoral muscle during the attempt.
The 35-year-old grimaced as he clutched his body in pain and was helped off the bench by a Malaysian official. Yee Khie would have won bronze had he cleared 223kg.
Iranian Aliakbar Gharibshahi broke the Paralympic record twice en route to winning gold on 252kg while Mongolia's Sodnompiljee Enkhbayar, the defending champion, was forced to settle for silver on 248kg this time.
Mexican Jose Castillo took the bronze on 222kg.
Yesterday (early this morning in Malaysia) two-time gold medallist Latif Romly was forced to settle for silver in the men's T20 (intellectual impairment) long jump after being hampered by an abdominal muscle injury.
Malaysia concluded its campaign in Paris with a two gold, two silver and one bronze haul.
Shuttler Cheah Liek Hou (men's singles SU5) and powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin (under-72kg) delivered the gold medals while shot putter Ziyad Zolkefli (F20) and Latif won the silvers. Sprinter Eddy Bernard won the bronze in the 100m T44 event.
