KUALA LUMPUR: Syafiq Puteh lost his partner, Ooi Tze Liang, at the Malaysian Open after the latter suffered a forehead injury during the men's 3m springboard event on yesterday (Nov 2).
And Syafiq found himself partnering Hanis Nazirul Jayasurya for the first time instead. They won the 3m springboard synchro silver with a score of 353.43 today at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil.
New Zealand's Liam Stone and Frazer Tavener won gold (355.44) and Hong Kong's Max Lee and Ayden Ng finished third (295.38).
Hanis, 23, said that he felt a bit nervous competing yesterday after what happened to Tze Liang.
"I was a last minute replacement for Tze Liang and this was the first time I partnered Syafiq in a competition.
"This was my first synchro event, and we lost to the Kiwis for the gold with just a few points," said Hanis.
Syafiq, 28, who won silver in the 3m springboard yesterday, said he was not sure whether Tze Liang would be ready for the World Championships in Singapore in July next year.
"I pray for his speedy recovery and look forward to partnering with him again in competitions."
Pandelela Rinong and Enrique Maccartney Harold won the 10m mixed platform synchro gold with a score of 289.20. Japan's Nishida Reo and Yamasaki Karen (282.60) and Taiwan's Yu Hsin Hsueh and Ze Lin Li (172.50) were third.
Only two teams took part in the 10m men's platform synchro. Malaysia's Jellson Jabilin and Bertrand Rhodict Lises won gold (369.84) while Japan's Nishida Reo and Yamada Shuta bagged silver (368.40).
