KUALA LUMPUR: National weightlifter Aniq Kasdan continued to shine as he clinched two silver medals at the World Championships in Manama, Bahrain, on Saturday.
The 22-year-old excelled in his signature event, the clean & jerk, with a lift of 166kg, contributing to a total of 296kg in the men's 61kg category.
Aniq, a 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, trained in Aceh, Indonesia, before heading to Bahrain.
He narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the snatch event, where his best effort of 130kg fell short of the podium.
"Alhamdulillah, it's a blessing here in Bahrain," said the Johor-born, who holds the national record of 297kg in the 61kg category, achieved at the Paris Olympics, in a heartfelt Instagram post.
He previously finished on the podium at the World Championships, winning the clean and jerk silver medal in the 55kg category at the 2021 Uzbekistan edition and bronze in the 61kg event last year in Riyadh, Sauda Arabia.
North Korea's Pak Myong Jin dominated the competition, claiming gold in both the clean & jerk (173kg) and overall total (305kg).
Myong Jin also secured gold in the snatch with 132kg, edging Vietnam's Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan (131kg) and Armenia's Garnik Cholakyan (131kg), who took silver and bronze respectively.
Anh Tuan claimed bronze in the overall total with a lift of 291kg, while China's Wei Haixian secured bronze in the clean & jerk with a 160kg lift.
