PHNOM PENH:Three Chinese enterprises will build the new Phnom Penh International Airport to serve the Cambodian capital.
According to the Khmer Times, construction will be divided into three phases, with the first to be completed this year.
YeeCon Long, from the Cambodia Airport Investment, said the process of designing the airport was 60 per cent complete.
He said permits were issued to three contractors last Monday and that the airport was expected to be completed by July 2022.
‘It will operate on a trial basis. The airport will be able to accommodate 27 million passengers by 2030 and about 30 million by 2050.’
A joint venture between local Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation and the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation is a 4F class airport.
The airport will cost US$1.5 billion and be located over 2,600ha in the Kandal province.
Khmer Times said Changi Airport Group was engaged as airport consultant to plan and advise on the construction of the terminal, passenger flow to facilitate a unique experience, and placement of duty-free shops.
Other western consultants were also engaged by the airport project owners to give it the best possible effort while contractors are expected to be Chinese.
