PETRA JAYA: Continuity in the implementation of government policies has helped Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd (Mydin), a leading local hypermarket operator, prosper over the past six decades.
Mydin managing director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin said a stable government, which is responsive to the welfare of the people, is essential for any businesses to flourish.
Ameer said the country has made significant progress in terms of economic development since Malaysia gained its independence on Aug 31, 1957.
“We know how prosperous Malaysia is now based on my father’s (the late Mydin Mohamed Ghulam Hussein) experience, who founded Mydin during the year the country achieved its independence.
“Maybe some quarters might not agree with me but I believe people have enough to put food on the table.
“I am not a politician and businesses are not politically-inclined. Having that said, we need a very stable government for businesses to grow and prosper.
“It does not matter who runs the country but it is important to have a government that is stable and to have continuity,” he told reporters here today.
With 77 outlets including 26 hypermarkets registering sales of RM3 billion annually, Ameer said Mydin has emerged as the country’s third largest hypermarket operator.
Earlier, Ameer attended the opening ceremony of Mydin Petra Jaya in Vista Tunku here, which is the company’s 26th hypermarket in the country.
The 812,090-sq-ft complex was officially opened by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Abang Openg.
With an investment of RM200 million, Mydin Petra Jaya is the third hypermarket in the state after Mydin Samariang in Bandar Baru Samariang and Mydin CityOne, located next to the CityOne Megamall Shopping Complex near here.
Abang Johari said Mydin played a significant role in helping small and medium enterprises reach out to their customers.
He also urged local entrepreneurs in the state to use the platform provided by Mydin to market their products and expand their businesses.
“You will have access to a greater market since your products will not only be sold at the three Mydin hypermarkets in Sarawak but also the other 23 branches around the country,” he said.
