THE smallest BMW GS returns and brings with it a few new variants to the burgeoning single cylinder trail category. These three new variants will see buyers spoilt for choice if they are in the market for a 'mini' GS.
BMW Group Malaysia managing director Hans de Visser said, "Our promise to Make Life a Ride is one that is made to every customer, each with varying needs and interests. We are pleased to be introducing three new robust and dynamic additions in the form of the new BMW G 310 GS and BMW G 310 GS '40 Years Edition', along with the new BMW G 310 R, designed for everyday versatility, whether in everyday traffic, or for when traveling is allowed again for rides on every terrain."
The G 310 GS is a genuine BMW GS as it retains the main elements of its larger siblings. The heart of all three remains the reliable 313 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with four valves, two overhead camshafts and electronic fuel injection. The peculiar rearward slant of its cylinder, which allows for a particularly compact vehicle architecture, is unique in the segment (the YZ Yamahas, which share the same architecture, are pure off-road machines). An output of 34 hp (25 kW) at 9,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 28 Nm at 7,500 rpm is still quoted. The engine covers are now adorned with metallic titanium paint.
A new addition is what BMW calls E Gas, an electromotive throttle controller or 'fly-by-wire' throttle which offers a more sensitive throttle response. Automatic idle speed increases when starting also prevents a possible sudden stalling of the engine. The self-boosting anti-hopping clutch is also a new addition and serves to reduce engine drag torque during braking while downshifting. It is also significantly lighter action at the clutch lever, which is also now four-stage adjustable, as is the brake lever. A new, improved LED headlight is equipped with three functions – high beam, low beam and daytime running light.
Asides from the usual G 310 R, available in Kyanite Blue Metallic (Style Rallye) and Polar White, the '40 Years Edition' model features the eye-catching black and yellow look, called Cosmic Black and inspired by the R 100 GS and the rich GS history. The new G 310 R, which comes in Limestone Metallic, bears an unmistakeable visual similarity to the sporty S 1000 R. Only 40 units of the limited-edition '40 Years' will be available.
The BMW G 310 R retails at RM 27,500. while the G 310 GS is RM 29,500. The limited edition G 310 GS '40 Years Edition' is only slightly more expensive at RM 31,500.
In the 'Urban Mobility' segment, which is what BMW calls its scooters, BMW Malaysia offers the new C 400 X and the C 400 GT. Both models are powered by the same single-cylinder 350 cc engine which puts out 34 hp (25 kW) at 7,500 rpm and 35 Nm peak torque at 5,750 rpm.
A revised CVT gearbox comes now with a smoother and more sensitive throttle response, as well as increased idling stability. Both also feature the E-gas and an electrically-operated throttle valve. A modified matrix and coating of the catalytic converter, a wideband oxygen sensor, modifications to the cylinder head, a new sensor on the generator cover, an adapted wiring harness and modified idle speed control are also improvements.
Automatic Stability Control (ASC) is now a permanent fixture and cannot be deactivated.
New brake calipers now offer a more stable and clearly defined pressure point, as well as improved roll-back behaviour of the brake pistons. More aligned lever travels for the rear brake on the left and the front brake on the right now also makes for a more symmetrical braking feel. Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) is standard.
Also standard is the Connectivity feature now on a 6.5-inch full-colour TFT screen. Together with the advanced BMW Motorrad Multi-Controller offering integrated operation, it allows the rider to access vehicle and connectivity functions. Effortless navigation by means of arrow-based navigation is also available through the BMW Motorrad Connected App.
Keyless Ride is also now standard, offering transponder activation for the steering lock, ignition, fuel-filler flap and anti-theft device, all in one vehicle key. Styling-wise, the large asymmetric twin LED headlight is aerodynamically designed now comes standard with a Daytime Running Light. The Flexcase system now features optimised lighting which illuminates from above, instead of the sides, for even better clarity.
In addition to the 12-volt onboard socket, the front right storage compartment is now equipped with a USB charging socket as well. The GT features a separate rider backrest and integrated footboards and retains its high windshield for everyday practicality and touring suitability.
"The Urban Mobility segment was the second highest delivered segment in the BMW Motorrad Malaysia portfolio in 2020 – just behind the all-time favourite Adventure segment, and we are confident these premium mid-sized scooters will win the hearts of our motoring enthusiasts in Malaysia once again," added Visser.
The new C 400 X (RM44,500) is available exclusively in the new Black Storm (Style Triple Black), while the new C 400 GT (RM48,500) in three paint finishes – the new Black Storm (Style Triple Black), Callisto Grey, and Alpine White.
