KUALA LUMPUR: Disney has just announced a new live-action Star Wars series featuring Jude Law.
AFP reported today that the new series Skeleton Crew would star versatile British actor Law of Captain Marvel fame.
Skeleton Crew, created by Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts, is the story of 10-year-olds from a tiny planet who accidentally get lost in the Star Wars galaxy.
Watts said: "It's the story of their journey to find their way home. It's something like Clone Wars, we like the idea of using kids to give a different perspective and see the galaxy differently."
Skeleton Crew will start filming soon and will be released next year.
Disney bought Star Wars' production company Lucasfilm for US$4 billion (RM17.5 billion) in 2012 and immediately began churning out a new film trilogy and the spin-offs Solo and Rogue One.
However, it has since slowed its big-screen output due to diminishing box office returns and mixed reviews ― and the launch of its Disney+ streaming service.
Disney+ has gained more than 130 million subscribers since its 2019 launch, and the creator of the hit show The Mandalorian Jon Favreau has thanked Star Wars fans for its rapid rise.
"The Star Wars fans showed up when they launched Disney+. They've all helped make Disney+ a success," said Favreau.
Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy said that there would be "plenty of time to showcase" upcoming films in the future.
The Star Wars franchise, created by Lucasfilm founder George Lucas, began with the film Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope in 1977.
This was followed by the sequels Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Episode 6: Return Of The Jedi (1983).
Lucas then directed a prequel trilogy, consisting of Episode 1: The Phantom Menace (1999), Episode 2: Attack Of The Clones (2002), and Episode 3: Revenge Of The Sith (2005).
The latest sequel trilogy comprised Episode 7: The Force Awakens (2015), Episode 8: The Last Jedi (2017), and Episode 9: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019).
