KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran rock singer Suhaimi Abdul Rahman or Amy of Search is now Datuk Amy.
The 64-year-old Search lead singer received the Darjah Pangkuan Seri Melaka (DPSM) from Melaka Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Rustam in conjunction with his 73rd birthday today.
Amy, who has been singing for more than four decades, received his Datukship from Mohd Ali at Dewan Istiadat, Seri Negeri in Ayer Keroh, Melaka.
"I would like to thank Tun Mohd Ali and the state government of Melaka for this great honour. Even though I am now a Datuk, I will always be Amy Search whom my dearest friends, fans, bandmates and loved ones know well," said Amy in a news report today.
He also said that the Datukship was a responsibility for him, to be an exemplary artiste and a timely recognition for his contributions to Malaysian music and entertainment.
A total of 883 people, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, received the Darjah Utama Negeri Melaka which carries the title of Datuk Seri Utama.
Amy, who hails from Johor Baru, is the father of award-winning actress and television host Nabila Huda Suhaimi.
He and Search most recently performed in Konsert Endemik Search at Zepp KL in the Bukit Bintang City Centre on June 4 and 5.
Search, which was formed 45 years ago, comprises bassist Nasir Daud, guitarists Hillary Ang and Abdul Rahman Mahmood (Man Kidal) and Amy.
