KUALA LUMPUR: WebTVAsia's horror film Pulau has scored big in Cambodia emerging as the highest-grossing Malaysian movie in the kingdom.
Pulau which premiered in Malaysia on March 8 earned more than RM700,000 in Cambodia where it premiered on June 22.
Pulau holds the record for biggest opening day and first three weekends in Cambodia, said WebTVAsia chief executive officer Fred Chong at a press conference in WebTVAsia's head office in Jalan Sultan Ismail today.
"It is amazing that Pulau has been a hit in Cambodia. With co-producers Filmforce Studio and My Way Pictures we want to thank all viewers for making it happen."
Executive producer Michael Helfman said: "Our talented cast delivered a surprise result in Cambodia."
National Film Development Corporation (Finas) chairman Datuk Kamil Othman said that it was great to see Malaysian content captivate overseas audiences.
Pulau has been selected for the Cambodia International Film Festival 2023 as its only Malaysian entry. It has also been screened in Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia.
WebTVAsia and Pulau's Cambodian distributor Westec Media signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop Cambodia's first YouTube-certified digital creator network under the WebTVAsia MCN umbrella.
Westec Media Group chief executive officer Michael Chai said: "WebTVAsia's expertise in building YouTube channels will allow us to scale up Cambodia's content ecosystem. Cambodian talent will greatly benefit from this."
