#JOM! EAT: Tetangga Kita's mouthwatering martabak

I bumped into Tetangga Kita by accident. Together with its social project's press release, the Indonesian eatery sent me two martabak, an Indonesian dish that's akin to the local murtabak.

I chose savoury martabak-- sapi (beef) and dendeng (beef cooked with chilli and soy sauce)-- and both of them were so good I had to contact them afterwards, proposing this review.

I love murtabak, but not the local version with egg and onion filling. I like the Singapore variety and every time I went there, I'd buy it from Zam Zam Restaurant to bring home to last me until my next trip.

Tetangga Kita's Martabak isn't the same as that, but it's very good in its own way. Its savoury martabak is called Martabak Telor. The egg, onion, leek and beef filling is wrapped in crispy egg. So you get a crispy layer before biting into its well-seasoned filling.

BEEF AND TUNA

Martabak Telor Sapi has beef as its filling and Martabak Telor Dendeng has rendang dendeng on top of the dish itself. This one's my favourite and I'm salivating just thinking about it.

I find the basic Martabak Telor, without any additional meat, to be bland but still good. The Martabak Telor Tuna is another hit if meat's not your choice. The plain taste of tuna goes surprisingly well as martabak filling.

The Martabak Manis, meanwhile, is like apam balik, but with a much more varied selection. Like apam balik, there are also two varieties, the Tipis or crispy version that you must eat immediately after it is delivered or served, and the Tebal, or thick martabak.

I try the Martabak Nipis with peanut butter and it's crispy and all right to me. I'm no apam balik fan, so this one, while tasty and crispy, doesn't tempt my tastebuds. But if you like the thin and crispy apam balik, you must give this ago.

The Martabak Manis selection includes this one, with corn and cheese.

SWEET TREAT

Then there's the Martabak Tebal, like the thick version of apam balik. Choose flavours like corn and cheese, hazelnut peanut butter, Lotus Biscoff, or even green tea Kit Kat. For those into sweet food, it makes great dessert.

To end the meal, Tetangga Kita offers cold beverages such as the bottled cold brew latte, made from single-origin Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee bean, then cold-brewed with milk with

a hint of gula Melaka. There's also the Indonesian Soda Gembira if you like something fizzy.

Tetangga Kita has two outlets-- in Hartamas Shopping Centre, Kuala Lumpur and Paradigm Mall, Petaling Jaya. You can also order via Oddle, Grabfood and Foodpanda. Follow @tetanggakita on Instagram for more information.
