Journey through China's ice kingdom

THE northeastern region of China, known as Dongbei, is a winter wonderland, where snow blankets the land, rivers freeze over and the atmosphere shimmers with cold beauty.

Renowned for its frigid temperatures and breathtaking snowscapes, Jilin and Harbin, two iconic destinations in Dongbei, offer a glimpse into a world where winter is celebrated in all its glory.

As a Malaysian accustomed to the tropical warmth of southeast Asia, the idea of venturing into such a frozen world seems like a distant dream. I've explored much of China — immersing myself in Shanghai's vibrant culture, admiring Guizhou's natural beauty and uncovering Liaoning's historical treasures.

But this journey is different; this time, I will be trading Malaysia's warm, humid air for the icy embrace of Dongbei's winter.

Upon arrival in Jilin, the contrast between the tropical heat I'd left behind and the biting -10°C cold becomes immediate. The landscape that unfolds before me is surreal, with snow-covered mountains and frosty forests glistening under the weak winter sun.

Stepping off the plane, the crisp, invigorating cold air fills my lungs. After taking in the charm of Jilin's winter beauty, I board a train to Harbin, eager to continue my journey into the frozen heart of Dongbei.

In Harbin, the city has been transformed into a sparkling winter wonderland, with frost-coated streets and giant ice sculptures shimmering in the sunlight.

Known as the "Ice City", Harbin comes alive with the excitement of its famous annual ice and snow festival.

A FUSION

During my time in Jilin, one stop stands out for its unique blend of modernity and tradition.

The Hill is a shopping mall like no other. Nestled in the heart of Changchun, the capital of Jilin province, The Hill is a recreational hub for locals and travellers.

Opened on Oct 1, 2019, this architectural masterpiece draws its inspiration from the iconic mountains of northeastern China, mainly the serene landscapes of Changbai Mountain.

These features of nature are seamlessly integrated into its design, creating a shopping experience that harmonises with the region's identity.

From the outside, The Hill captivates visitors with its dramatic facade that mirrors the contours of a majestic mountain. As you step inside, you're greeted by winding paths that lead upward, evoking the feeling of ascending a scenic trail.

The shops are thoughtfully placed along these paths, creating an immersive experience that feels more like an exploration of nature.

It's not just a mall to spend money, it's an adventure of sorts.

Spanning an area of 22,000 square metres, The Hill has something for everyone. Fashion lovers can browse high-end boutiques, foodies may indulge in local and international cuisine, and families can enjoy a relaxing stroll through the mall's stunning surroundings.

The carefully curated layout of shops and eateries also makes it a favourite among photography enthusiasts, with its picturesque architecture that allows natural light to filters into its spacious design.

But the magic of Harbin isn't just about the ice. The city is steeped in a rich cultural blend of Russian, Chinese and European influences, giving it a distinct vibe unlike anywhere else.

The Harbin Harvesting Ice Festival is an extraordinary spectacle that celebrates an ancient tradition dating back centuries.

Every winter, ice is cut out from the frozen Songhua river using traditional methods to serve as building blocks for the city's famous ice sculptures.

With chisels and saws, the artisans cut the ice with precision, and this labour-intensive work itself is a mesmerising display of skill that combines art and engineering.

The St Sophia Cathedral is a stunning testament to the city's rich history and cultural fusion.

Built in 1907 when the city was in Russian hands, this majestic Orthodox church is one of China's colonial legacy in the far east.

Its striking onion domes, colourful mosaics and intricate details make it one of the most iconic landmarks in Harbin.

Today, St Sophia Cathedral has been turned into a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into Harbin's multicultural past.

Whether viewed from the outside, with its grand, towering presence against the snowy backdrop, or from within, where the light filters through its stained glass, the cathedral's unique blend of Russian and Chinese influences reflects the city's role as a crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures.
