RM211 million Batang Sadong bridge opens to the public

ASAJAYA: After four years of construction, the multi-million ringgit Batang Sadong bridge was opened to the people today.

The bridge, which was approved by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak during his visit to the state in 2011, was built to provide better road connectivity for more than 50,000 constituents in the Batang Sadong parliamentary constituency.

Costing RM211.38 million, the bridge is one of many promises fulfilled by the Barisan Nasional (BN) Federal and state governments to improve the wellbeing of the people of Sarawak.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the bridge is now open to motorists following a final road safety audit of its infrastructure conducted by the project's consultant.

"This is another project promised by the Prime Minister, chief minister and community leaders for the people here," said Fadillah during the bridge’s soft-launch here today.

Present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Nancy Shukri, who is also the Batang Sadong Member of Parliament, and Sadong Jaya assemblyman, Ir Aidel Lariwoo.

Also in attendance were Alwa Idris and Simoi Peri, who are the state assemblymen for Simunjan and Lingga respectively.

State Public Works Department (PWD) Ir Zuraimi Subki was also present.

Earlier, Fadillah was briefed on the construction and final audit of the project by PWD spokeswoman Normawati Mohamad Ali, before conducting a walkabout with Nancy and the rest of the guests for a final inspection of the bridge.
