LABUAN: A jealous prison warden injured his wife and son as he ran amok at the housing area of Labuan Correctional Centre here yesterday.
The man who was shot by policemen when he resisted arrest and tried to attack them, succumbed to the gun wound and other self-inflicted injuries.
Prior to that, about 3pm, an argument broke out between the 53-year-old man and his 45-year-old wife who he suspected had an affair with another man.
Labuan police chief Superintendent Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the man took a machete from a bedroom and used it to stab the wife at her abdomen and slashed her several times.
The wife is currently being treated at the Emergency unit of Labuan Hospital while the son, 23, suffered minor injuries on his hand when he tried to stop the father.
The suspect got into and pursued the wife and son who fled to rescue themselves. The woman collapsed in some bushes at the roadside while the son ran off.
“After receiving the report at 3.13pm, policemen asked the man to surrender himself, but the suspect pointed the machete towards them and threatened to kill himself if they came closer,” he said in a statement.
The man escaped from police road block, becoming more aggressive towards the police, resulting in the police firing a first warning shot.

When he did not show sign of surrendering, the police opened fire and this time a bullet hit the man’s left thigh.
The man still did not show any sign of giving up his weapon, causing them to use a taser gun to take him down and took him to hospital, but police was informed at 9.10pm of his death.
There was a slash at the back of his neck believed to have been inflicted by himself, Muhamad Farid added.
The case is being investigated under Section 326 of Penal code for causing serious injuries using a weapon and Section 307 of Penal Code for attempted murder.
