Judge visits Tawau fatal crash site

TAWAU: Sessions Court judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud last night visited the accident site where four men, including a teenager, were killed in a four-vehicle crash at Jalan Chong Thien Voon last July 8.

Two people, including the accused, who was suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol, were injured in the 1.15am incident.

The judge arrived at the BDC commercial centre (1Arena), here about 8pm. He was accompanied by a translator and a court staff. They spent about 30 minutes at the scene.

Also present were deputy public prosecutor Wan Muhammad Fitri Wan Azizan, the accused - Olivia Chong Oi Yun, 34, her counsel Abdul Ghani Zelika and the investigating officer from Tawau police station.

It was learned that the prosecution had called up five out of 20 witnesses to give their statements during the proceeding earlier.

According to charge sheet, Chong, a management executive at a private company here, was recently charged under Section 44(1)(b) Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum fine of RM20,000 and imprisonment up to 10 years.

The victims were identified as Hiew Nyuk Wei, 30; Clawence Wong Vun Kit, 21; Dicson Lim Kien Shing, 16; and Chong Wei Chan, 21. Another motorist, Chin Guan Xiong, 21, suffered a broken leg in the crash.
