Despite pleas, Malaysian Prabu Pathmanathan executed in Singapore

JOHOR BARU: Prabu Pathmanathan, a Malaysian who was on death row in Singapore since 2014, was executed early this morning.

Lawyers of Liberty adviser N Surendran, who had been leading efforts to commute Pathmanathan’s sentence, said the execution was carried out at Changi Prison.

“The execution took place after our final appeal for clemency from Singapore’s President Halimah Yacob was rejected,” he said.

Surendran said was unsure what time the execution was carried out. However, in Singapore, executions usually take place at around 6am.

“Prabu’s body has been claimed by his family members and he will be cremated in Singapore,” Surendran added.

On Dec 31, 2014, Prabu, 31, was sentenced to death for trafficking 227.82g of diamorphine, or heroin, into the island republic.

But Surendran said there were doubts surrounding Prabu’s conviction, as the drugs were found in a vehicle driven by another person, and not Prabu.

It was also claimed that the ‘confession’ obtained from Prabu by the prosecution was made under duress.

On Wednesday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong said Malaysia will urge Singapore to commute Prabu’s mandatory death sentence to life imprisonment.
