Husband's 'discovery' of missing wife ends in murder confession

SEPANG: A 41-year-old man was arrested for allegedly strangling his wife to death after she was said to have filed for divorce.

The body of the 40-year-old victim, who was a lecturer at a local university, was found near a lake at PKNS Pinggiran Cyberjaya in Dengkil, here, at 1.04am on Thursday.

Sepang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof said the incident unfolded after the suspect went on a "search" for his missing wife, before alerting the authorities upon "discovering" her body.

In a statement, Wan Kamarul said it was believed the victim was earlier strangled with a headscarf in Taman Mas, Putra Perdana on Wednesday afternoon.

"The suspect then drove the victim's body to the pond at about 4.30pm. He later placed the victim's body in the driver's seat and took away her purse and handphone before leaving. He even left the engine running.

"Upon returning home, the suspect then ordered for an e-hailing ride on the pretext of looking for his supposedly missing wife. He brought his 14-year-old daughter along for the search.

"The suspect had also claimed to have received help from the e-hailing driver in locating his wife. He said he only called the police after 'realising' that his wife was unconscious."

Wan Kamarul said post-mortem at the Serdang Hospital revealed that she had died due to strangulation.

"Investigations also revealed that the couple had marital issues after the suspect pronounced the talaq (divorce proclamation) on June 24."

Wan Kamarul said the suspect was believed to have strangled the victim after a heated argument on her decision of filing for divorce.

"The suspect admitted to having murdered his wife because he was furious over her intention to divorce him. They were married in 2005 and have a 14-year-old daughter."

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. The suspect has been remanded until Aug 6.
