MAQIS foils attempt to import lumber illegally at Pasir Gudang Port

JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS) yesterday foiled an attempt to illegally import lumber at the Pasir Gudang Port.

A Johor MAQIS spokesman said during a routine inspection at about 11.40am, the department's enforcement officers found the lumber hidden among a shipment of furniture from the United States.

"The lumber, weighing 6,830 kilogrammes and valued at about RM19,665.96 were imported into Malaysia without a valid import permit.

"The lumber have been seized for further action," the spokesman said in a statement.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 11(1) of the MAQIS Act 2011 for importing without proper permit, licence or declaration.

He also reminded all importers and exporters to adhere to the regulations so that the disease control of animal, fish and plant as well as food safety standards are preserved.
