Kelantan Macau scam syndicate changes MO

KOTA BARU: Macau scam syndicates have changed their modus operandi from posing as Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) officers to insurance officers in their relentless attempts to deceive the public.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Shafien Mamat said the latest tactics were detected based on several cases recorded by the police.

So far this year, he said police have recorded at least three cases of Macau scams where its members posed as insurance officers.

"We suspect this is their latest modus operandi to cheat the public.

"However, they are still using the old ways to deceive their victims by making calls to the victims and sometimes pretending to be police officers to earn the confidence of victims," he said.

Shafien said the syndicates would normally target high-income groups especially government servants.

He reminded the public to be wary of the syndicates and always refer to the relevant authorities if they receive such calls.

The latest Macau scam case recorded by the police recently involved a female civil servant, in her 50s.

In the report, the victim claimed she lost RM395,000 after being cheated by the syndicate who posed as insurance and police officers.

The victim who was from Machang, claimed that the incident started in September but she only lodged a police report on Dec 2.
