MMEA seizes 29 sets of China prawn net traps in Langkawi

LANGKAWI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has seized 29 sets of banned China prawn net traps (bubu naga) in Langkawi waters yesterday.

Kedah/Perlis MMEA director First Admiral (Maritime) Romli Mustafa said the seizure was made 0.4 nautical miles southeast off Teluk Apau at 4pm yesterday.

"The operation was carried out following public complaints regarding the presence of China prawn traps at the location.

"All the traps are estimated to be worth about RM2,500 and violate Section 11(3)(c) of the Fisheries Act 1985.

"The use of Chinese prawn traps poses a threat to the marine ecosystem and affects the livelihood of coastal fishermen," he said in a statement.

He added that the agency would not hesitate to take action against any activity that violates the law within national waters.
