KUALA LUMPUR: An Algerian man was arrested after he attacked two policemen at the guard post and trespassed into the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters (IPK) early this morning.
In the 1.40am incident, the suspect approached the guard post and tried to ask something from one of the police personnel on guard duty.
City police chief Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said suddenly, the suspect took out a hammer and hit the policeman before chasing another to seize his Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun.
"After injuring one of the policemen, the suspect ran into the IPK compound and chased another policeman to seize his firearm.
"At the same time, the suspect also hit the back of the policeman with the hammer," he told Berita Harian.
Azmi said several other policemen arrived at the scene but the man became more aggressive leading to a scuffle.
"The guard post contacted the KL Police Control Centre before help from the Dang Wangi police headquarters (IPD) was dispatched.
"The suspect, who is believed to be intoxicated or of unsound mind, was arrested, with the hammer being seized," he said.
The suspect was taken to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment.
Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Noor Dellhan Yahaya confirmed that the suspect had been arrested for further investigation.
