62-year-old man detained for drug possession dies

IPOH: A 62-year-old man who was arrested for drug possession died while receiving treatment at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) here today.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Yahaya Hassan said the man was arrested on Saturday in Jalan Carey here.

He said he was taken to the lockup at the Jelapang police station here while investigations were being carried out.

"The man was supposed to be charged at the magistrate's court here today but he was observed to be unwell while in the lockup.

"He was then taken to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital by ambulance for further treatment," he said in a statement today.

Yahaya added that at about 10.30am today, the man was confirmed dead at HRPB after emergency treatment was given by the medical officer.

"This case is being investigated by the Criminal and Death in Custody Investigation Unit of the Integrity and Compliance Standards Department and Bukit Aman police," he said.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted tomorrow at the HRPB.
