Traffic cop in the dock with 24 counts of bribery amounting to RM4,800

KUANTAN: A 53-year-old police sergeant major was slapped with 24 corruption charges involving RM4,800 in bribes between 2016 and 2019 at the Sessions Court here today.

Rasip Majid who is currently based at the Merlimau police station in Melaka, pleaded not guilt before Judge Datuk Ahmad Zamzani Mohd Zain.

He was accused of receiving RM200 cash from an individual whom he knew had connections with his official duties on 24 occasions.

The money was allegedly transferred through online banking from the 47-year-old individual's account to Rasip's bank account.

The accused was attached to the Jerantut Traffic Investigations and Enforcement Department when he was believed to have committed the offence between Dec 7, 2016 and Oct 15, 2019.

The offences under Section 165 of the Penal Code are punishable with a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy public prosecutor Siti Sarah Zainal Abidin urged the court to set bail at RM5,000 for all the charges, but the accused who was not represented pleaded for a lower amount.

   

The accused told the court that he was supporting his parents, school going children and wife.

When Zamzani asked the accused if he was still on duty and his monthly income, Rasip replied that he was still attached to the police department in Melaka and earned about RM6,000 a month.

Zamzani set bail at RM5,000 for all the charges with one surety and imposed an additional condition for the accused to report at the nearest MACC office every month starting next month until the case is over.

He told the accused to surrender his international passport and fixed Nov 21 for mention  to allow Rasip to appoint a lawyer.
