Security guard charged with possessing three parang

KOTA BARU: A security guard was charged in the Sessions Court here today (Jan 15) for possessing three parang without a valid purpose last Monday.

The accused, Nik Azahar Mohamed, 51, pleaded not guilty and requested a trial after the charges were read out before Judge Zulkifli Abllah.

He was accused of possessing the three parang, measuring 51cm, 60cm, and 62cm, without a valid purpose.

The incident took place at Taman Kub, Kampung Chica, Kubang Kerian, at 2.10am on Jan 13, 2025.

He was charged under Section 7(1) of the Corrosive Substances, Explosives and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958, which carries a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of 10 years in prison.

The prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli, while the accused was represented by lawyer Muhammad Husni Mubarak Ghazali.

Kamarul Hasyime did not propose bail for the accused.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Husni requested a minimum bail amount, stating that his client had to support his wife and a child, and only earned RM700 a month as a part-time security guard.

Muhammad Husni further mentioned that the accused and his wife suffered from health issues, including kidney disease and diabetes.

The court granted bail of RM8,000 with one surety and set Feb 25 for mention of the case.
