JOHOR BARU: Police arrested 25 mat rempit in a two-day crackdown codenamed Ops Motorsikal targeting noisy motorcycles and reckless riding, here, since Friday.
Some 15 motorcycles were seized, and 34 summonses were issued during the operation conducted along Jalan Ibrahim Sultan, and Jalan Tan Hiok Nee.
The targeted areas said police are notorious for disturbances caused by loud exhausts and traffic violations.
Johor Baru (South) police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said police inspected 21 motorcycles and 25 riders, including pillion riders.
Errant riders, he said, were issued summonses for offences such as noisy exhausts.
"Ten motorcycles had exhausts that were either modified or fitted with unauthorised gadgets emitting excessive noise," he said in a statement.
"Five riders were found to be riding without valid licences, eight had modified registration plates, three lacked side mirrors, and eight failed to display their probationary 'P' stickers," he added.
Raub noted that public safety remains their main priority and warned motorcyclists that modifications such as loud exhausts not only disturb public peace but are punishable by law.
The seized motorcycles were confiscated under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
