KUALA LUMPUR: Special Officer to the Health Minister, Zahari Sarip, was sworn in as Dewan Negara senator today.
The Segamat Umno division chief and Segamat Barisan Nasional chairman got the nod from the Johor state legislative assembly for the appointment.
The 50-year-old said he was grateful for the trust given to him by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khalid Nordin, and also Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“I will carry out my responsibilities not just in debates, but also to solve issues affecting the people,” he said when met after the oath-taking ceremony.
Veteran Labuan Umno leader, Datuk Bashir Alias, was also awarded a three-year appointment as Dewan Negara senator.
The 52-year-old Labuan Umno deputy divisional chief and Labuan Corporation's Advisory Council chairman said although the experience will be new to him, he will learn all he can to carry out his responsibilities to the best of his abilities.
Meanwhile, senators Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki were reappointed for another term.
The swearing-in ceremony took place before Dewan Negara president, Datuk S.A. Vigneswaran.
“I would like to congratulate the newly sworn-in senators. I hope you carry out your responsibilities as you defend the Federal Constitution.
“As for the senators who are reappointed, this is a recognition of your contributions in the past and that you are expected to continue to serve for the betterment of the country,” he said.
