Hazani Ghazali takes over reins of Esscom

SANDAKAN: Datuk Hazani Ghazali is now the new head of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom).

The former federal police’s Special Actions Unit commander takes over the post from Datuk Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid, who will be retiring on June 26.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman witnessed the handing over of the Esscom commander’s duties at Sri Libaran in Sandakan today.

In his speech, Musa thanked Bari for his service in leading Esscom since Dec 23, 2015.

“The state government and the people appreciate the contributions and sacrifices made by the security forces and Esscom.

“I am happy to note that under the leadership of Bari, Esscom foiled several attempted kidnappings in Lahad Datu and Semporna, which also led to the death of three members (of the kidnap-for-ransom group Abu Sayyaf in December last year),” he said.

Musa noted that Esscom has shown its capability and credibility in safeguarding the state’s sovereignty and safety, which are crucial to ensuring the trust and confidence of residents and tourists in the area.

“It is our hope that this effort will continue under the leadership of Datuk Hazani. The state government is always working with the federal government to ensure that the state remains safe.

“The Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib Razak) also remains committed to ensuring Sabah’s safety and has assisted in placing security assets in the state, especially along the east coast,” Musa added.
