7-hour downpour triggers flash floods across Melaka

MELAKA: Seven hours of continuous heavy rain since 1am today has triggered flash floods in several low-lying areas here.

Melaka Civil Defence Department director and Flood Disaster Management chief secretariat Lieutenant Colonel Effendy Ali said inundated areas include Kampung Batu Hampar, Kampung Pulau Kelapa, Kampung Sungai Putat, Taman Bukit Beruang Bistari and Taman Melawi, Bukit Beruang.

"The total number of affected flood victims is still unknown as we (are in the midst of) registering them.

"(In anticipation of evacuees), two relief centres have been opened at Balairaya Peringgit and SMK Munshi Abdullah," he added.

Other affected areas include Malim, Ujong Pasir, Jalan Bendahara, Hang Tuah, Kota Laksamana and Bukit Cina.
