SHAH ALAM: The religious school at the centre of a deadly blaze that killed 23 people last month has appointed lawyers to observe the court proceedings against the six suspects in the incident.
Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah religious school principal Mohd Zahid Mahmood said two of the school’s lawyers were present at the Kuala Lumpur magistrate’s court when the suspects were charged on Thursday.
“The school would like to inform (the public) that we follow the case closely through our lawyers Boestamam Ahmad and Tajudin Razak, who acted on behalf our behalf as legal observers.
“At the same time, we have engaged lawyers who are willing to represent us and the victims’ families pro bono.
“These lawyers are led by Abd Razak Muhidin, and they will be present during the case mention at the magistrate’s court on Nov 28,” Zahid said in a statement today.
Zahid said the families of the victims who wished to be represented by a legal observer could make arrangements with the school directly.
On another matter, Zahid, who is also National Tahfiz Al-Quran Insititutions Coalition (Pinta) chairman, said he looked forward to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s announcement on religious schools nationwide in Budget 2018.
“Pinta welcomes the prime minister’s statement that he will announce something during the tabling of the budget for the welfare of tahfiz schools in the country.
“We hope that this allocation will be able to further improve tahfiz institutions, especially in the safety aspect,” he said.
Zahid said Pinta hoped that the allocation will benefit all tahfiz schools without any exception.
