GMMF, M'sian permanent mission to highlight moderation and New York event

KUALA LUMPUR: The Global Movement of Moderates Foundation (GMMF) and the Malaysian Permanent Mission to United Nations (UN), New York are co-organising a side event titled 'The Global Movement of Moderates as a Platform for the Voices of Moderation' at the UN headquarters in the American city on Monday.

The event at 1.15 pm (American time) will be opened by Malaysia's permanent representative to the UN Datuk Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob, according to a statement from the foundation.

It will feature a panel discussion headlined by Prof Emeritus Alex Schmid, research fellow at the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism in The Hague, and Jean-Christophe Bas, founder and chief executive officer of The Global Compass.

The event session will seek to engage leading thinkers, diplomatic corps and activists from various countries and affiliations on how moderation can be a decisive factor in determining the way forward to shape prospects of peace and security.

The discussion would also precede consultations with member states - as well as to garner further support - on a draft resolution on moderation to be tabled by Malaysia under the agenda item Culture of Peace at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly for the year 2017. — BERNAMA
