Plans on track for Lee Chong Wei Badminton Academy in Sg Petani

ALOR STAR: The Kedah government is not scrapping the proposed Lee Chong Wei Badminton Academy project in Sungai Petani, as some are speculating.

Instead, the state government is waiting for further action from the private company which initiated the project.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said the academy is a private initiative and the state will proceed with the project once the investment comes in.

He said the state government has allocated 20.2ha of land in Sungai Petani for the project.

“The site is part of 60.7ha of land which the state has proposed for a sports complex in Sungai Petani.

“Another 20.2ha of the land is allocated for a racing track for which the federal government approved a RM30 million allocation,” he added.

Bashah was responding to a supplementary question from (PPBM-Ayer Hitam) Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, who asked whether the project will be scrapped since the state is now focusing on the racing track project.

Earlier, state Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Aminuddin Omar, when replying to Ooi Tze Min (PKR-Bakar Arang) told the sitting that there is a possibility that the proposed Lee Chong Wei Badminton Academy could be moved to Johor Baru.

He said that the state had decided to proceed with the racing track first, since it has already received an allocation from the federal government.

On a similar note, Bashah told the assembly that the state will build a mini sports complex in all districts in Kedah.

He said the state government will seek the assistance of the National Sports Council and the federal government for the allocation, since the state has limited resources to build the complex.

“So far, we have approved the site for a mini stadium in Kubang Pasu district and in Sungai Petani, we are still in the midst of discussions for the project.

“We need to take into consideration various factors in carrying out the project, including the cost and maintenance work for the stadium,” he added.
